Titan Turbine Flow Meters

Titan Turbine Flow Meters

Turbine Flow Meters – for Flow Measurement Control

Titan’s own turbine flowmeter range is all based on the Pelton wheel technique. This well proven method is the ideal way of measuring low rates of flow of low viscosity liquids.

Their comprehensive ranges of radial flow turbine meters offer a selection of products for many differing types of application.

Some are suitable for chemical plant others, for the semi-conductor industry and others are ideal for drink dispense or beer monitoring equipment.

All have rugged bearings and excellent repeatability. The choice of fitting type reflects the function of the meter, some have simple hose barbs and others may be fitted with custom designed process connections to suit an OEM installation.

The Technology

Titan’s small turbine flowmeter range use a radial flow principle based on the Pelton wheel technique. This well proven method is the ideal way of measuring low rates of flow of low viscosity liquids.

For these mini flowmeters, a jet of fluid is directed at a turbine that is mounted on robust low friction sapphire bearings. The geometry of the turbine and the fluid chamber ensures that the rotational speed of the rotor is proportional to the flow rate through the device. The use of this radial arrangement allows more energy to be imparted into the turbine, so the bearing drag is far less important. Furthermore, because more energy is available the bearings themselves can be a lot stronger so increasing the life of the flowmeter. For larger flows, some of the liquid can bypass the turbine chamber, which then behaves as a “shunt” to the metered fluid. Accuracy is still maintained and the output remains linear.

AW-Lake Turbine Flow Meters

Turbine Flow Meters – for Flow Measurement Control

Axial turbine flow meters are designed with wear resistant internal components to provide trouble-free operation and a long service life.

Fluid entering the flow meter is first conditioned by the inlet flow straightener which reduces turbulence in the fluid. The moving fluid causes the rotor to spin at a speed that is proportional to its flow rate.

As the turbine blades on the rotor pass through the magnetic field of the pickup, an electronic pulse is generated. This pulse train signal can then be used to monitor the fluid’s actual flow rate or the total amount of fluid that has passed through the flow meter.

The number of electronic pulses generated by the meter, per unit volume, is known as its K-Factor. Each flow meter is calibrated to find its unique K-Factor, which is supplied with the flow meter when purchased.

SIKA VES Calorimetric Flow Monitor

Compact version
The flow monitor is easily screwed into the process pipe directly via a connection thread. As the measuring probe is available in two different lengths, a wide range of pipe sizes and wall thicknesses are covered.

At the compact version VES the flow sensor and the corresponding switching transducer form a single unit. This means that flow can be monitored directly at the point of measurement.

Function principle
The calorimetric flow monitor works on the principle of the detection of temperature differences. The cylindrical measuring probe contains two temperature sensors. These have optimum heat conducting contact with the medium and are thermally well insulated from each other. One sensor is heated with a constant electrical power while the other sensor is not heated and thus takes on the temperature of the medium. When the medium is not in motion the temperature difference between the two sensors stabilizes at a constant level.

The flowing medium cools down the heated sensor. The changing temperature difference between the two sensors depends on the velocity and is a parameter for monitoring the specified minimum flow rate. This signal is sent to a comparator which controls a transistor output signal.

With a potentiometer the output signal is set to the requested set point. When the flow rate fails to reach this limit the transistor activates the output signal. A six position LED array displays the proximity to the alarm point which has been specified.

Areas of Application include:
SIKA VE series calorimetric flow monitors are used to monitor flow rates with typical application areas such as:

  • Protection for pumps against dry running
  • Monitoring lubrication circuits
  • Cooling and heating circuits
  • Monitoring for leaks

SIKA VTI15 Turbine Flow Sensor

The liquid flowing into the turbine flow sensor is split into individual jets by the guiding blade. These jets hit the rotor evenly from different directions, setting the rotor in motion. The rotation speed of the rotor is then converted to an electrical pulse signal (frequency): The rotor is fitted with stainless steel pins. An inductive proximity switch detects the rotor rotation.
A flow-proportional frequency signal (square-wave signal) is made available.
Given the uniform inflow to the bearing, the forces largely cancel themselves out and wear is reduced to a minimum. The extremely hard bearing materials – sapphire and hard metal – also guarantee an exceptionally long endurance.

SIKA VTI15 turbine flow sensors are used for flow measurement and dosage in water and water mixtures, and are used in many applications such as:

  • Monitoring cooling circuits in machine and plant engineering
  • Water treatment
  • Cleaning processes
  • Dosing
